home chef review 2026

If you’re looking for a real-life Home Chef review 2026, here’s my honest experience after trying it for the first time with my family of four.

We’ve now made two meals plus dessert, and I wanted to share a full first-week review — what worked, what surprised me, how long it actually took, and whether it’s worth it for busy weeknights.

What Is Home Chef?

20260301 174934

Home Chef is a meal kit delivery service that sends pre-portioned ingredients and step-by-step recipes straight to your door. You choose your meals online, and everything arrives cold-packed with insulation and ice packs.

What initially drew me in:

  • No meal planning stress
  • No buying full-size sauces and seasonings for one recipe
  • Healthier meals without overthinking dinner

Now let’s get into the actual food.

Meal #1 Review: Chicken Teriyaki with Rice and Mango

Our first meal was Chicken Teriyaki with Rice and Mango.

Right away, I loved how colorful it was. The mango added brightness, and everything looked fresh when I unpacked it. The flavors worked really well together, and it felt balanced.

Personally, I would have liked a slightly stronger teriyaki flavor — but that’s preference, not a complaint. It was still very good.

I know my picture does not show a lot of meat but there was PLENTY. It just does not show through with the way I plated it.

My fiancé really liked it.

My 9-year-old said it was “amazing” and “really, really good,” which is basically a five-star review in our house.

My 5-year-old was in a bit of a mood that night, so I’m not fully blaming the meal for her hesitation.

Cook Time

The recipe suggested 25 minutes.

It took me closer to 40 minutes — but that included:

  • Kid interruptions
  • Letting the dog in and out
  • Cleaning up as I went

Even at 40 minutes, it was completely doable for a weeknight.

Portions

We had plenty of food — and leftovers. That’s important for me. No stretching portions. No adding random sides to make it feel like enough.

Meal #2 Review: Garlic Sesame Chicken Stir Fry

The second meal may have been the standout of this Home Chef review.

We made the Garlic Sesame Chicken Stir Fry from Home Chef , and this one impressed me even more.

Cook Time

The recipe suggested 15–20 minutes.

It took me 25 minutes start to finish — which felt very close to accurate. This one also required very minimal dishes, which is a huge bonus on a weeknight.

Kid Approval

Both kids said:
“mmm yummy”
and
“Why are you cooking such good meals lately?”

I laughed out loud at that one.

Best part? It had bok choy in it.

They didn’t even notice.

Parent win.

Again, we had plenty of food and leftovers.

Dessert Review: Strawberries & Cream Nordic Waffle

I also added an extra: the Strawberries & Cream Nordic Waffle.

I served it warm with vanilla ice cream.

It was de-li-cious.

Crispy edges, soft center, sweet but not overwhelming — and honestly? It felt like something I wouldn’t normally have access to. That’s one thing I really like about Home Chef : I was able to try a food item that simply isn’t available anywhere near me locally.

It felt a little elevated. A little different. And very worth it.

Packaging & Delivery Review

The delivery arrived properly cold with multiple large ice packs and thick foam insulation lining the box.

Everything felt fresh and well protected.

So far, the ingredients appear mostly preservative-free, which I appreciate.

Pros and Cons After Two Meals + Dessert

Pros

✔ Fresh, flavorful ingredients
✔ Generous portions with leftovers
✔ Minimal pantry clutter
✔ Simple instructions
✔ Realistic weeknight cooking
✔ Kid-approved
✔ Unique food options not available locally

Cons

✘ First meal took longer than suggested (real-life distractions included)
✘ I personally prefer slightly stronger flavors

Overall, the pros definitely outweigh the cons so far.

  • Need realistic weeknight meals
  • Want to try unique food items they can’t find locally
