Authentic Szechuan Food in Mesa (Open Until 12:30 AM) Is Original Cuisine Worth It?

The Kind of Dinner Find You Don’t Plan… But End Up Loving
Authentic Szechuan food in Mesa? Yes! And it’s absolutely worth it.
We were near downtown Mesa and ready for dinner, so I did the classic “Chinese food” search on Google Maps. That’s how we landed on Original Cuisine,a Szechuan spot about 3 miles away with 4.5 stars.
Two things immediately stood out:
- They’re open late… like 12:30 AM late (which is rare out here)
- They could seat us right away
That second one felt like a win, especially after another nearby restaurant quoted us an hour wait (you better believe I double-checked Google Maps for options after that 😅, but I will try that other place some day!).
First Impressions + Service
We walked in, were greeted warmly, and seated right away.
The space is clean, cozy, and unpretentious. Not overly designed, but comfortable in a way that lets the food be the focus.
What really stood out though?
Our waitress.
She was incredibly helpful and confidently guided us toward some of their best dishes. We ordered one of her recommendations, plus another she confirmed after we mentioned we love spicy food.
(Pro tip: if someone who works there knows the menu like that… trust them.)
What We Ordered (And What I’d Get Again)
Sweet & Spicy Shredded Pork — $13.99 (Must Order)

This was the waitress’s recommendation and it ended up being our favorite.
It’s one of those dishes you think about later.
Perfect balance of sweet + heat, with a slightly crispy texture that keeps every bite interesting.
If you go here and only order one thing… make it this.
Chongqing Spicy Crispy Chicken — $14.99
This is a dry-style Authentic Szechuan dish loaded with chili peppers.
The chicken had an amazing crispy crunch with just enough tenderness inside, and the spice level was definitely there (in a good way).
That said, I’m a sauce girl… and I found myself wishing for just a little more.
👉 If you order this, I highly recommend adding a side of rice ($1) to balance the heat.
Dumplings with Chili Sauce — $9.99
These come topped with a generous amount of garlic and chives, and the flavor is really solid.
Just one note: they’re steamed.
I personally enjoy both styles, but I did miss that crispy bite you get from a fried dumpling or potsticker. If you’re someone who loves that texture, it’s just something to keep in mind when ordering.
The Menu (And Why I’d Go Back)
One of the best surprises?
Original Cuisine’s menu is extensive.
Like… flip-through-it-for-a-while extensive.
And after seeing what we got with just a few dishes, I’d go back and do the same thing again, just ask the waitress what to order next.
She clearly knows what she’s doing!
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?
If you’re looking for:
- Authentic Szechuan flavors 🌶️
- Late-night dining in Mesa 🌙
- Generous portions at reasonable prices
Then yes, Original Cuisine is 100% worth trying.
It’s the kind of place that doesn’t feel overly hyped… but quietly delivers.
Those are usually the best finds.

Desert Edit Tip 🌵
If you’re exploring Mesa and want to turn this into a full outing, pair it with one of my other local favorites:
- My visit to the Arizona Museum of Natural History
- Or a fun day trip like Out of Africa Wildlife Park
Dinner + an experience = always the move.
